Boquillas del Carmen

So, you’ve been at Big Bend several days now. You’ve Hiked the hikes, Jeep’d the roads, Soaked in the Hot Springs, Canoe’d through the canyons, and you’re wondering what to do next… Answer:  Go To Mexico!
The Border crossing to Boquillas (Bow-key-ahs) is open Wednesday through Sunday 8am- 5pm.  You can wade across when the river is low, or take the trip in an old rowboat and for $5.00 a nice Mexican fellow will do the rowing for you.  No Reservations, Do Not forget your passport and get yourself on the correct side of the border before 5pm or you will turn into something far worse than a pumpkin!!
Once you have crossed the Rio Grande you have a choice; You can walk up the dusty road to town, OR… you can pick out a sleepy burro and for $5.00 round trip you may ride in style.  It will be the best $5 you have spent in awhile.  We also  hired Filipe, one of the friendly guides, to take us on a tour of his hometown.  We saw most all the homes and buildings, and heard all about life here in this little village.  We visited the one-room school while the children were in class.  You may explore the village on your own of course, but we enjoyed talking and learning about life here.
We purchased a few hand made gifts from some of the women along the main street.  This is one of the ways they make their living here. The village is 160 miles of rough road from the next town where their own supplies can be purchased.
After our tour, we had a super lunch including cold beers & margaritas.  The scenery, the music and the whole day was Amazing… Perpetual laughs and indelible memories.
In order for you to really get the feel of our experience, I put a few of our photos together in a music video.  Feel free to spend about 3 minutes watching this clip on my Vimeo Page.  No password or membership is needed.
