Heading to Whitehorse

Getting an early start today with Whitehorse our planned destination. Its 274 Miles with some expected gravel breaks along the way according to the Milepost. Weather is good, and the traffic again is light to nothing at all.  About Every 10 minutes or so we may see an oncoming auto, Truck traffic is a bit heavier in the Southbound direction.

Miles and Miles of Road

Just when we thought our trip was going smoothly we approached the Big Creek Bridge, (highway 1 DC651.1 pg 178 in the MP) observing a Truck, no trailer, coming in the opposite direction. We were midway on the bridge and at that moment it was obvious to me he was going faster than he should be. His southbound approach was coming down a hill and a fairly sharp right turn onto the bridge.  He was gripping the steering wheel as he approached the entrance to the bridge and Bam his truck mirror Ate our mirror. There was a turnout immediately after the bridge so we pulled off. He never even let up on speed. We watched him climb the small hill in the southbound direction and that was that. Our large RV mirror was shattered and hanging by the electrical wires that operate the adjustable mirror. We disconnected the wires, dusted off our disappointment, got back onboard and continued North. We have read and been told by other RVers about the frequency of windshield and mirror breakage on this voyage. Our philosophy is it could happen anywhere and if you stay parked somewhere for fear of damages or breakdowns you may as well buy a stick house and stay home.

The rest of the ride was uneventful compared to our morning, and we arrived safely in Whitehorse.  We decided this would be a quick overnight so the Walmart parking lot would be sufficient.  Wow, it was packed! Both customers and RVers.  We were lucky to find one of the last spots in the area designated for overnight campers. Next time through Whitehorse we will look for another place to overnight.

We did some shopping at Walmart and then headed over to Canadian Tire. They have an extensive auto parts section, as well as anything else you might need. After purchasing a little add-on mirror designed for autos towing a trailer, we proceeded to duct tape it to the arm that held the large mirror.  It seems like it will do the job until we arrive somewhere long enough to wait for a shipment from Newmar.  Good news is they have them in stock; the bad news is they sell for $800.00  plus freight.

Off to Kluane Lake tomorrow.
