The Spit This Time

So back to Homer. I’m happy about that because there is still so much to see and enjoy here. On the Spit again only this time we are parking the rig here too.
The Boardwalk
We liked it at the Elks, and when we passed it the sites were all empty, but we wanted to experience the beach scene this time. The Fishing Hole Campground was full when we arrived, so we drove back to the Mariner and took a beachfront site. The price of staying here used to be $15.00 a night, but the City of Home has raised all the camp spots on the spit up to $24.00 a night. Of course, these are all dry camp spots no power or water, but there is a central dump station for $5.00.  Both AT&T and Verizon are working strong here. No potable water here.  We can’t get much closer to the beach than this!
Low Tide
Since the fishing was off in Soldotna, Kathie and Jeff decided to join us in Homer and we are now parked side by side here.
Jeff n Lily on the beach
I’m enjoying sitting here and looking out at Kachemak Bay. There is always something to watch. Eagles, otters, the colors of the water, and the surrounding mountains seem to be in continuous change.
The View from our front window
Not to mention walking on the beach and finding rocks and beach things to fill my pockets. I have to hide those things though.  One of my boxes of rocks souveniers got loose on the rough roads in the back bathroom and scattered all over into the bedroom and behind the slide!  Lucky I heard some crunches as I was putting the slide out. I stopped it before they became lodged into the mechanism. YIKES. So Mark is not happy with me Or my rock collection right now. I was able to get my arm in there and retrieve them. Whew.  These Alaskan roads are a challenge in a motorhome. Sometimes its a matter of going only 25-30 miles an hour in places, otherwise the house is thrown into earthquake mode.
Treasure Hunters
A phone call from Beluga Air has informed me that there is a seat onboard the flight to Hallo Bay on August 2nd if I would like to join the expedition. August 2nd is only a few days from now, also my father’s 96th birthday.  They plan to hike at least 6 miles, and we should be prepared to wade through water nearly to the top of hip waders with our camera equipment stowed in our packs. There will be a great deal of hiking down into small streams and up the other side into the very tall grass as well as beach locations. I’m hesitating a little now, Not because of the hike, for 6 miles is nothing; It’s the hip waders instead of hiking boots, across swampy ground that makes me concerned, it’s also the 7 hours on the ground surrounded by grizzlies that’s on my mind. Where is Sue Carroll about now, we could take this on as a team!!
Next day,  I find myself at the local sporting goods store purchasing the required equipment for the trip.
Waterproof pants, (in case the waist-high grass is wet from overnight rain,) hip waders, (for crossing two thigh-high creeks) heavy socks for the waders, add a few Luna Bars so I will have energy and oh yes another PB&J will be needed for an in-flight snack.
OK, I am all set…

It’s now August 1st – Rain or Shine, I board Beluga Air at 7:00 AM tomorrow for an hour and a half flight to Hallo Bay. This very remote location is the site of many of the Bear shots that were in Disney’s Bear movie.
