Northern Nevada Scenes

Nothing says “The Wild West” like the sight of a herd of wild horses in the Nevada desert. But a chance view of wild horses in Northern Nevada is not a common experience anymore. Many have been rounded up over the past years. If you know the spots where the few herds hang out you may have a better chance.

I was lucky to find a few in Washoe Valley as well as the BLM area just southeast of Reno.

Around the Washoe Valley area, one species you can be sure to see are some mule deer. They look a bit scroungy here since they are in transition between summer and winter coats. They love hanging out in the alfalfa fields along East side of Washoe Lake. It’s not uncommon to see 50 – 100 in this area.

The Carson Valley is well known for some of the best soaring in the country. In addition to that sport, there are many balloonists who float up and down this valley as well. One morning, just before departing Nevada, I spotted a couple of balloons enduring the below-freezing temperatures.

It’s time to leave Nevada and head to San Diego for a few weeks.
