Leaving the Yukon

We left Kluane Lake in a pretty good rainstorm this morning. There were patches of fog and then More thunderstorms as we traveled North.

We were quite hungry for something to eat since we only had bananas before we left the campground and I was looking forward to a bakery that I read about in the Milepost.  Located at Historical Mile 1147, Page 206 MP is Pine Valley Bakery & Creperie. The book said they feature fresh-made crepes to order and crusty cinnamon rolls and other authentic French delicacies.  That was the longest 62 kilometers EVER!  I’m telling you if you pass up this place you are losing out.  I know, it was the BEST cinnamon roll I have ever had by FAR!  Mark had the Ham and Egg Crepes, and he devoured it.

They are open May through September, Owners Oliver, and Mylene.  The restaurant is warm and cozy.

Ok, away we go heading to the next Eatery which is BUCKSHOT BETTY’s.  They too advertised The Best Cinnamon Rolls. We were no longer hungry, but it was a Must Stop so we could send our friend Betty Anderson a picture.

A favorite stop in Beaver Creek

Guess what, they didn’t have Any Cinnamon Roll the morning we stopped, so glad we didn’t pass up the last stop, but we got the picture we needed. I’m showing off my socks Betty gave me for Christmas that sayOH THE PLACES THESE SOCKS WILL GO.”

We made one more stop before the Border crossing at a rest area. This stop was to throw out any leftover fruit I couldn’t choke down in 5 minutes, our last two potatoes and the opened packages of meat when into the freezer.  The items you can and cannot take past these various borders seem to change like the weather.  People get asked entirely different questions at these crossings and depending on the Agent asking the questions, this can be a smooth or not so smooth experience. For us it was smooth.  “Passports please, How many people, any pets, any firearms, how long were you in Canada, Did you purchase anything in Canada, Are you carrying more than $10,000.00 in cash, how much alcohol are you carrying,”  No questions about the food, didn’t need to see Lily’s papers, no physical inspections, just have a nice trip.

ALASKA AT LAST!!

Finally Made It!

From the Border to Tok was some of the roughest roads we have been on so far. Large gravel areas, multiple potholes and soft or no shoulder.

Road Damage due to Frost

Since we entered the Yukon, we have seen only ten Bears, many Porcupines, and various raptors. A little disappointing to not have seen Elk, Moose or Caribou, based on the numbers of signs warning us of those animals. But the journey is just beginning; we have some weeks ahead. Hopefully, we’ll see many of the different species along the way.

NOTE: Throughout Canada, the AT&T connected devices including data MIFI worked better than the Verizon cell phone and MIFI.  They connected to Canada’s Rogers and Bell systems effortlessly. After leaving Watson Lake North, the signal was only useful near the small towns.  Having both AT&T PLUS and Beyond Unlimited with Verizon gives us lots of options while roaming with no additional fees for data or voice usage.
